Knowing the differences between a Hearing Aid and a Personal Sound AmplifierPublished: Thursday June 21, 2012, 20:11For those suffering from hearing loss, what were once simple tasks and activities can now be incredibly stressful. These individuals often rely on hearing devices such as hearing aids to ease this stress and make their daily activities as normal as possible.

However, many individuals suffering from hearing loss also use a personal sound amplifier, not understanding that these devices are not meant for those with hearing impairment. There are in fact many differences between a hearing aid and a sound amplifier and they should not be used interchangeably.

What is a personal sound amplifier and when should it be used?

Personal sound amplifiers are often advertised as devices that will enable you to better hear your favorite television programs and help to amplify general sound. They often promise to allow you to enjoy your favorite shows without disturbing those around you. It’s important to note that while a personal sound amplifier can allow you to better listen to your favorite programs, or allow you to hear better at a distance, it is not a hearing aid. While both a hearing aid and sound amplifier can provide comfortable amplification of sound and can function similarly at times, only hearing aids are built to make up for hearing impairment. It’s important that consumers recognize these differences and understand that sound amplifying devices are not meant to serve as an alternative to a hearing aid. Rather, these devices should only be purchased after a consumer has determined they are not in fact suffering from hearing loss. Using a sound amplifier, rather than a hearing aid when suffering from hearing impairment, can cause further damage and ultimately lead to other hearing complications. The best way to determine if you are suffering from hearing loss is to visit your health care professional and have your hearing properly evaluated.
